Cooking During The Pandemic

With more time at home because of the pandemic, North Americans have taken to the kitchen. People have been spending more time cooking meals, learning how to bake, and teaching their families some secret recipes. Cooking at home can be fun, educational, tasty, and healthy. Recently, a survey was done to find out how much have we changed our cooking habits over the past few weeks. Don’t forget that you can find some incredibly tasty and healthy recipes by clicking here!

Top 7 Pandemic Diet Statistics

  1. More than 50% of North Americans are cooking more right now, and over 45% are doing more baking. Those asked said being in the kitchen has raised their spirits and has brought more family bonding.
  2. The most sought-after recipes are for simple, practical meals. Sixty-one percent of those surveyed have searched for those on search engines like Google and Yahoo. Sixty percent have looked for ways to use up specific ingredients that may be in the pantry. Don’t forget to check the expiry dates on items you are “using” up.
  3. Fifty-seven percent of people say they’re wasting less food because of the lockdown. Since we are spending more time in the kitchen, using leftovers to create new meals have become a common practice.
  4. At least 50% of people who’ve spent more time in the kitchen say it’s made them more confident in their cooking skills. And 35% are enjoying it more than they used to. People have been finding that cooking and baking has helped them to find a way to lower their stress levels as well.
  5. Are we eating any healthier because of all this? Yes and no. Thirty-nine percent of people said their diet has improved…but 40% said they’ve leaned on more COMFORT foods to get through quarantine. It is okay to cheat once in a while, but always try to eat healthy to keep your immune system strong.
  6. Snacking throughout the day is at an all-time high, especially for parents. Fifty percent of people with kids said they’re eating more snacks than they were before the crisis hit. Some are eating because of boredom or stress. Instead of reaching for those potato chips or a candy bar, why not take some time to meditate, do some yoga or even go into the yard and do some gardening.
  7. Fifty-one percent of people who’ve been cooking more said they’ll keep it up when the lockdown ends. It seems like more people are finding some joy in the art of cooking. Some of the top reasons to continue cooking are it’s cheaper, it’s healthier, it’s relaxing, and we like trying new foods.
