Health Benefits of Peas

health benefits of peas
Agricultural research has found that green pea crops are environmentally friendly. Peas are what is called a “nitrogen fixing” crop. With some help from bacteria in the soil, they can take the nitrogen gas in the air and convert it into more of a complex and usable form. The added nitrogen in the soil reduces the need for added fertilizer. The pea plant also helps stop the erosion of soil.

Prevents wrinkles

Studies have found that the anti-inflammatory properties of the pea is helpful with the prevention of wrinkles and osteoporosis. These properties work with the antioxidants and seem to help with the reduction of both conditions. Researchers have found that the antioxidants such as flavonoids, catechin carotenoid and others are very helpful in preventing the aging of skin and they tend to provide healthy glow to skin as well.

Great for expectant mothers

Studies show that fresh pea pods contain folic acid.  Folate is one of the B-complex vitamins needed of the synthesis of DNA inside the cell. Studies are being done and the results strongly suggest that eating folate rich foods by expectant mothers would result in preventing neural tube defects in newborn babies. A serving of fresh pea pods contain 16% of the daily recommended amount of folate.

Helps with Alzheimer’s

The common garden pea contains approximately 21% of the daily recommended allowance of Vitamin K. Vitamin K plays a role in bone mass building function. This function is the result of the promotion of osteoblastic activity inside the bone cells. Vitamin K is also known to play a role in Alzheimer’s disease by limiting neuronal damage in the brain. More studies are being done on the link.

Supports weight loss and relieves constipation

Garden peas are known to help with weight control because of their low caloric content. One cup of peas contains just over 115 calories plus they have a high fiber content which helps you feel full longer. The high fiber content in peas is also helps in reducing constipation. The fiber supports food passing through the digestive system and adds bulk to the stool, which helps you to stay regular.
